 Alice's Story
Alice is an inspiration to all those dealing with a loved one suffering from this disease. Not only does she care for her husband Arthur who was diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's in his fifties, and his mother who also has the disease, she tirelessly raises funds and awareness of this devastating disease in the hope that we may one day find a cure.
Here she talks about how the disease has affected Arthur, who was her childhood sweetheart, and her own day to day life as an Alzheimer's carer.
“Today as I feed him, his handsome face smiles and those blue eyes look at me, and it breaks my heart when there is no recognition and he doesn’t know who I am… I can count on one hand how many visitors we have.
“Friends and family would rather not come, as it is easier than facing this illness and seeing what it can do. Some cross over the road or pretend not to see us when we are out in his wheelchair.
“The day I discovered he was ill, I went home, sat in the bath and cried and cried. Arthur and I have been together since I was 16. He was my best friend, my husband, my lover. We did everything together.”
